We are excited to be celebrating World Oceans Day once again at the Flint RiverQiarum! Since 2008, World Oceans Day has been annually celebrated on June 8 to bring attention to our oceans, the life they bring to the Earth, and their importance to our lives. Our oceans generate most of the oxygen that we breathe, help to regulate the Earth's climate, and, through the water cycle, clean the water we drink. Our oceans also provide and endless supply of food. Check out worldoceansday.org for more information about this international celebration.
Saturday, June 9, 11 am to 3 pm
Come and join us at the Flint RiverQuarium as we celebrate World Oceans Day on Saturday, June 9, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. We will be focusing our celebration on upcycling your recycling! All of the activities will be included with RiverQuarium admission and be located in the Golly Gee Garden behind the Aviary exhibits. Come explore all the fun creations you can make with your old cardboard, bottles and caps and learn about the food chain in the ocean and how each animal plays an important role. The day will be full of games, activities and competition as we celebrate and appreciate this great water that gives us life!
Recycled Art Exhibition
The Flint RiverQuarium is hosting an exhibition of local artists’ work featuring garbage and that has been transformed by their talented hands into beautiful art. The purpose of this exhibition is to promote awareness of how much waste can be reused. Come and check out this limited event during the month of June, displayed in the lobby of the Flint RiverQuarium.
Here's How You Can Get Involved!
Social Media Competition
The Flint RiverQuarium will be holding an Instagram competition for the month of June to celebrate World Oceans Day and promote recycling and sustainable choices. Participants are encouraged to post creative photos of how they reduce, reuse and recycle products in their homes. Examples include, but are not limited to: creating useful products from recycled materials, choosing reusable products over single use plastic products (stainless steel straws, bamboo toothbrushes, reusable water bottles, etc.), collecting water in rain barrels, composting, etc. All entries must tag the Flint RiverQuarium (@flintriverquarium) in their posts and will be put in a drawing for a one year Family membership to the RiverQuarium. Competition runs from June 1 to June 30, with the drawing being held on July 1, 2018.
